Purple MarshBy Roy Guerette

Roy Guerrette graduated from the University of Southern Maine in 1997 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics. He worked as a graphic artist for ten years while continuing his craft as a studio assistant with Portland Pottery Studio. Originally from the state of Maine, he relocated to Durham, North Carolina to begin his second career as a nurse in 2013. Roy, along with 2 other artists, recently opened Fusion Gallery in downtown Durham to expand upon his clay work and envelope himself in the creative energies woven into the fabric of Durham, NC. He enjoys creating, teaching, and the comradery of a community-based studio where multiple forms of art creation are represented and explored. As a community health nurse, he reaches the underserved and marginalized populations to treat, counsel, and promote optimal health outcomes. Roy volunteers, donates, and promotes organizations that encourage minority involvement in fine arts. He seeks to educate, expose, and encourage the creation of art by providing classes and art events to the communities he is so passionate about. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, he is especially interested in providing a platform where all are free to explore their artistic interests and pursue career opportunities in these areas. He creates safe spaces and promotes a sense of self-pride to individuals who lack exposure and confidence in a world where judgment, bias, and hate is prevalent. He seeks opportunities to provide his talents, skills, and motivation to individuals in most need to empower marginalized groups to achieve their highest potential, especially in the arts. Painting Inspiration Roy created Purple Marsh in May 2023 as a tribute to diversity and inclusion. The multicolored reeds and plant life represent a seat at the table for all underrepresented populations. The sun setting and reflection on the water is the voice, the voice of everyone now seated at the table. The voice that is now being heard.
